The ski sessions are held behind or near the Riverview Community club so that we can be near washrooms and a heated building. We also ski on the trails found on Churchill Parkway.
Sessions occur on Sundays from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. with hot chocolate after each session. Skiers are asked to be on snow and ready to start promptly at 1:30 p.m.
We hope to be out on the snow on as many Sundays as possible. However, under extreme wind chill/temperatures (-25˚C and colder) the sessions will be either shortened or cancelled. The convener will use Environment Canada weather information (and will check outside) to determine if a session will be cancelled. Notification of a cancelled session will be sent out by email only no later than 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The season is scheduled to start on Sunday, November 22th. We will begin with dry-land games if there is no snow. The season windup will be in March depending on trail conditions. We hope to have one or two social events as part of the Jackrabbit experience.
The cost of the program is $80 for one child (prorated for additional children in a family: $70 for second child, $50 for each additional child in the family). Registration costs cover group membership in the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba, insurance, club equipment and supplies, and training costs.
Parents are encouraged to ski with their children and take
part in the Jackrabbits sessions. Your participation will help makes skiing a positive, shared experience.
If you’re interested in coaching, please contact the convener. We also need volunteers to assist with , rental gear preparation and distribution, post-session hot chocolate making and trail grooming (training provided). Volunteers are an invaluable part of the success this program has experienced over the last decade. Please consider helping in any way you can.
Information regarding purchasing ski equipment will be emailed to all Jackrabbit families. Used equipment is available throughout the city, and the Cross Country Ski Association of MB holds a Swap Shop each winter. Woodcock Cycle Works offers a 10% discount on cross country ski equipment for Riverview JackRabbit participants and has a junior ski gear take back program that is worth checking out.
Parents are responsible for finding equipment for their children. However, a limited amount of equipment is available for rent from the Riverview Community Club. A deposit is required, and renters must be active participants in the Jackrabbit program. Rental fees are $60.00 (for boots, poles and skis).
Jackrabbits are encouraged to ski regularly outside of Jackrabbit sessions and to try ski racing! We’ll regularly inform parents of races and ski events taking place in Winnipeg and elsewhere in the province.
We advise you to consult the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba website for information about MB ski events (www.ccski.mb.ca) tips on waxing, etc.
